unique look.” Powers, whose company had previously built the serpentine retaining walls on the lakes of the golf course, showed photos of his previous artistic paver work to the architects, engineers and owner representatives. Soon after this meeting, they presented him with a design. Powers and his crew used a small dry cut saw to prepare the brick. He said that while it could also have been done with a wet saw, that method can be pretty rough on the hands. They prepared templates at their shop and then cut the bricks at the jobsite. Although Magic Touch does many kinds of brick projects, paver work is the most enjoyable for Powers. “It’s a creative challenge to get the cuts just right so that the design stands out as planned,” he said.

Following a sidewalk from the patio leads to a brick stairway that drops down to the lake nearest the clubhouse. At the bottom is a circular brick paver patio and then a shorter set of stairs takes you directly to the water. The plan is to make Lakes at Taylor a year-round facility and the lake will be used for ice skating in the winter. So in the summer, recreational fun at Lakes of Taylor can include a round of golf, sipping a cool drink on the patio and then perhaps a sumptuous dinner in the restaurant. In the winter, fun can include skating around the pond, enjoying a steaming mug of cocoa and then perhaps a sumptuous dinner in
the restaurant.

C.D. Lewis said the project’s success was due to the cooperative effort exerted by members of the construction team. “The key players were project superintendent Jim Allen, Jim Riddle, the director of recreation for Taylor and Dave Zanley, the architect. Together they made up a nucleus that was exemplary of the kind of team that will make a project successful,” said Lewis. “It was gratifying to be part of a project that had meticulous planning, proper funding, great cooperation and fantastic public acceptance of the facility upon its completion.” The public has been impressed and the Lakes at Taylor clubhouse is now a very popular place to lunch, dine or celebrate a special time. •
